The Mecca of Wind
Over the past 10 years Tarifa and 'become a point of reference for practicing kitesurf. The words 'kite surfing' and 'Tarifa' have become synonymous. Surely you have already heard that it is known throughout the world for its large, beautiful and unspoilt beaches of fine white sand, for its night life in the old town full of bars, pubs and restaurants not to mention the great wind statistics. All this makes for a favorite spot for lovers of kite surfing, windsurfing and sailing.
There are two predominant winds here in Tarifa, although during the winter the wind can 'blow from any direction:
Poniente: "side on shore" blows from the sea, light with a constant speed between 10 and 25 knots with small waves for riding.
Levante: "side off shore" blows off the land, with speeds between 20 and 40 knots, usually flat water but can be gusty.
Aside from the kite surfing Tarifa has many places to visit, including the famous Isla de las Palomas, which separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic Ocean. The European and African coastlines are separated by the Straits of Gibraltar, which is only 14 km from Tarifa. There is a ferry to Tangiers on the Moroccan coast, the crossing takes only 35 minutes.
The Casco Antiguo, or Old Town, is enclosed by ancient walls within which you can almost smell the Arabic culture. Because of its attractive location Tarifa is visited by tourists from all over the world.
